Windows Brooklyn @ ola baby w/Emily Harris & Katie Parry

An art exhibition at local stores on Court & Smith Street from June 6-13, 2009.
home_header
Artwalk with artist talk: Saturday June 13th, 2-4pm.
Opening Party: Saturday June 6, 1-6pm, Tranist Garden at Smith St and 2nd Place.

Windows Brooklyn takes art out of the traditional museum or gallery setting and incorporates it into a vibrant public space. The show turns pedestrians into viewers, slowing down impatient walkers and transforming the frequently traveled routes of harried commuters. Turning independent business owners into collaborators who are willing to exchange commerce for culture, the exhibition is a commentary on the nature of the window both as a physical object and as an idea, one that goes far beyond just pieces of glass. We seek to reflect the incredible history of Brooklyn while simultaneously adding to it. We are forging new connections between artists and their communities, changing the ways in which we direct our gazes, and altering our habits for interacting with the structures that surround us.

Bambino Mio has finally arrived to the USA & ola baby

June 2, 2009 by olababy

Bambino Mio provides a complete nappy system (non-disposable diapers) suitable for babies from newborn to potty training stage (around two and a half years) including 100% cotton nappies, waterproof nappy covers and biodegradable flushable nappy liners.

Bambino Mio Nappy System:

Bambino Mio’s nappies and covers have been designed with comfort and simplicity in mind, which make them convenient and easy to use.

Bambino Mio’s two-piece system:

  • The nappy cover has Velcro style fasteners to make them quick and simple to use, and allow adjustment to suit the shape of each baby. The edges of the covers have soft binding on the waist and leg cuffs. The waist and cuffs are elasticated to ensure a snug fit.
  • A 100% pure cotton nappy. Nappies have a three panel construction with a thicker centre panel giving maximum absorbency with minimum bulk.

The nappy can be separated from the cover so that there is no need to change the cover with every nappy change, simply place a fresh nappy inside the cover and fasten back onto your baby.

For added convenience we recommend the use of the biodegradable Mio Liners. The nappy liners retain solids and are safe to flush down the toilet. They are designed with a one-way action that allows moisture to pass through but prevent it seeping back.

The Enviornment:

Disposable nappies are disposable for parents, but not for the environment! Around 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK. The Government is committed reducing the amount of household waste going to landfill, and have targets set by the European Union to reduce waste by 65% by 2020.

Bambino Mio is committed to continuing to produce environmentally friendly products. Cotton nappies are one of the fastest growing areas of baby care, and during the past five years the number of parents using cotton nappies in the UK alone has increased from 2% to 15%.

Come see for yourself this new non-disospable diaper system with flushable, yes flushable bio-degradable liners at ola baby, 315 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231, 718-422-1978.

An excerpt from: Today’s Boutique Chic for Tiny Shoppers, It’s a Kidsworld Magazine, 4/2008

Thanks to some truly innovative retailers, it really is becoming a kid’s world out there! Where once the realm of fashion was dominated by trend-loving adult men and women, today the youngest of fashionistas are making boutiques across the U.S. their new playgrounds.

Excerpt: Just a borough away, in Brooklyn, NY, Olá Baby sells to little ones from infant through children’s size 6. “We’ve been selling a lot of clothing that has fun sayings lately,” says owner Carla Barbosa, citing the Very Excellent Baby collection of onesies — with phrases like “No hablo” or tattoo-inspired hearts with “Mom” or “Dad” in them — as a customer favorite. “In two weeks, I’ve already had to make two reorders!” she adds. One of her bestselling gift items recently has been a onesie from the brand Pluto that plays off a screen shot of the Google homepage, featuring the words “Goo goo, gaa gaa.” This label’s Big Brother/Big Sister T-shirts have also been popular among shoppers in search of the perfect gift. Olá Baby additionally offers toys, furniture and accessories for babies and young children. Cloud B’s Sleep Sheep and Twilight Turtle continue to be a huge hit, while new parents are often drawn to the revolutionary Bumbo Seat infant chair and its new attachable play tray.

Shopping for Baby Gear With Christiane Lemieux, The New York Times, September 10th 2008

April 3, 2009 by olababy
OUTFITTING a nursery used to be a snap: pink for girls, blue for boys, yellow for babies whose parents were a bit more progressive. Put a crib here and a bassinet there, mount an animal mobile that plays “Farmer in the Dell,” and the work was done.

Today, there is a wider variety of well-designed products that are sophisticated and eco-friendly. Traditional pastels are giving way to other palettes, like black and white with bold accents.

When Christiane Lemieux shopped for a nursery for her son, William, now 11 months old, it was a mild case of the cobbler’s children having no shoes. She and her husband, Joshua Young, own Dwell Studio, a home furnishings company that will add a new line of children’s furniture, rugs and bedding in October. Preparing the new line kept her busy. “I’m still scrambling to catch up,” said Ms. Lemieux, who also has a 2 ½-year-old, Isabelle. “I’ve had to re-educate myself from one child to the next.”

With no time to lose, she headed out on a spree in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and found a world of color and ingenuity. At Olá Baby on Court Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, mothers, nannies and strollers were out in force by 10 a.m. “I’ve already got a crib, so I bought this one,” Ms. Lemieux said of a white model by Oeuf made partly of reclaimed wood and with nontoxic finish, that can be converted into a toddler bed by replacing its high bars with low-profile rails.

At Modern Tots in Dumbo, Brooklyn, Ms. Lemieux found a high chair that can tilt back to become a bassinet. She dismissed a velvet rocker (“For those who have a household staff,” she said). But she praised a changing table that looked like a dresser. Ms. Lemieux chose a three-section model with a blond wood base and plain white doors, simple and elegant enough to be used later as a sideboard after its tray top is removed.

John Derian Dry Goods in the East Village carries leather poufs (“Talk about convertible,” Ms. Lemieux said) that can act as seating or a child’s table; French costumes to hang as decorations until a future Halloween; and bold (and costly) ink drawings by Hugo Guinness. In the meatpacking district she found more poufs (in silver lamé) and a polar bear rocker at two branches of Yoya. “The whole animal thing is kind of done for adults,” she said, “but it’s still great for kids.”

The list of products needed to raise a child can seem endless, but Ms. Lemieux takes it in stride. “Parenting is scary; there’s no manual,” she said. “The right stuff makes you feel better, or at least sleep better at night.”

Hola Brooklyn Babes, UrbanBaby Daily, June 12, 2006

April 3, 2009 by olababy
Nothing beats the convenience of purchasing everything for your kid – from first baby bottles to highchairs to art supplies – under one roof. That is, as long as you don’t have to hit a superstore. (Try navigating a mega-sized store while holding a baby and chasing a toddler.)

Here’s a new, one-stop-shopping alternative you’ll be happy to know about. Olá Baby offers a vast selection of clothing, toys and gear, and is a welcome addition to kid-friendly Carroll Gardens. Founded by neighborhood resident and entrepreneur Carla Barbosa, Olá Baby has virtually everything for ages newborn up to six.

From basics like Mustela and California Baby skincare, to sturdy strollers by Phil & Ted, and adorable onesies by KeeKa and Monag Kids (complete with such cheeky sayings as “Brad Spitt”), your newborn is covered. Necessities like cribs by Oeuf and bedding by dwellbaby make outfitting the nursery incredibly easy. And all of the clothing lines are simple yet stylish (retro dresses by Ooh La La and Oinkbaby). You’ll also find diaper bags, storage solutions, shoes, and great baby and birthday gifts such as developmental toys by Alex, Melissa & Doug and Bumpkin Bibs.

Like most new players in the baby retail space, Olá Baby is a multipurpose place serving as a local gathering spot for parents and kids alike. From drawing tables for little ones, to a comfy couch at the back of the store with Baby Einstein on perma-play, Olá Baby makes the whole shopping-with-kids thing positively pleasant. And in a further outreach to the community, Barbosa has opened the store on Mondays to a series of classes on childbirth preparation and breastfeeding support.

A store definitely grows in Brooklyn.

Say hello, TONY Kids Issue 13: July–August 2006

Hipster moms and dads jonesing for fashionable baby gear in Carroll Gardens need look no further than Olá Baby. After lamenting the dearth of kid stores nearby, Carla Barbosa decided to put out her own shingle. The shop offers plenty of trendy stuff, like Phil and Ted strollers (from $380) and Diaper Dude bags ($54 and up). Brooklyn-based companies, such as Kee-Ka, also take up shelf space; their onesies emblazoned with pop-culture savvy phrases like “Nobody puts baby in a corner” ($22) will ensure that your baby is the coolest on the playground. Realbirth recently started holding in-store classes on newborn care and there are also plans for a parents’ support group—just the thing to bring the community together. — Amy Plitt

With the Phil and Ted stroller in the window, you know the owner of this new baby/toddler shop in Carroll Gardens knows her clientele. She has also filled the shop with a smart variety of gift items from bibs that read Drool Barrymore to Melissa and Doug toys for the toddler set. Ola baby also carries diaper dude diaper bags, which are a big hit with the daddy set, and they are stocked with cribs, bedding and many other baby essentials. With a couch in the back of shop, placed next to a selection of books, and a TV that plays Baby Einstein, this baby boutique is both extremely inviting and a great addition to the neighborhood. Oh and did I forget to mention the spotless bathroom with changing table in the back of the shop?

New York Magazine, Shopping Review of ola baby

April 3, 2009 by olababy
Owner Carla Barbosa opened olá baby—Portuguese for “hello baby”—in Carroll Gardens, the neighborhood where she grew up, and she keeps it homey with public restrooms, a couch where moms can nurse, and a poster of her nephew. The spacious baby-blue-and-pink store has a wide range of products from a select few brands; Barbosa uses her background in retail management to choose well-designed, functional, often organic labels. For baby-shower gifts, pick up a rock-and-roll concert tee by Kaos, a Diaper Dudes carryall bag, or any number of all-natural health and beauty products for mom and baby. Furniture to outfit a new nursery is selected with small spaces in mind: Oeuf’s clean, classic cribs transform into toddler beds; expandable, oval-shaped Stokke cribs work well in cramped city apartments. Stokke, Bugaboo, and Phil & Ted strollers are in the back, as is the play section, which has Melissa & Doug’s wooden toys, nontoxic art supplies, and Putamayo Kids CDs. — Caroline Kinneberg
